Code of Conduct

This Code of Conduct sets out the standards of behaviour expected of all Safe Hands workers in line with the NDIS Code of Conduct 2018 and our organisational values. Every worker must read, understand, and sign this document before commencing work.

1. Purpose

Safe Hands is committed to providing high-quality, safe, and person-centred NDIS supports. This Code of Conduct reflects our values and sets clear expectations for every person who works with us - employees, contractors, subcontractors, students, and volunteers.

This Code is grounded in the NDIS Code of Conduct 2018, which applies to all NDIS providers and their workers. Compliance with this Code is a condition of employment or engagement with Safe Hands. Breaches may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

2. The Seven NDIS Code of Conduct Obligations

All Safe Hands workers are legally required to comply with the NDIS Code of Conduct 2018. The seven obligations are:

Respect Rights & Autonomy

Act with respect for individual rights to freedom of expression, self-determination, and decision-making in accordance with applicable laws and conventions.

Respect Privacy

Respect the privacy of people with disability at all times and handle personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Safe & Competent Practice

Provide supports and services in a safe and competent manner, with care and skill. Only provide supports within your training and role.

Integrity & Honesty

Act with integrity, honesty, and transparency. Do not engage in fraud, deception, or dishonest conduct in relation to participants or Safe Hands.

Raise & Act on Concerns

Promptly take steps to raise and act on concerns about matters that may impact the quality and safety of supports provided to people with disability.

Prevent Harm

Take all reasonable steps to prevent and respond to all forms of violence, exploitation, neglect, and abuse of people with disability.

Prevent Sexual Misconduct

Take all reasonable steps to prevent and respond to sexual misconduct. Sexual contact with participants is strictly prohibited and is a criminal offence.

The NDIS Code of Conduct applies to workers individually - not just to Safe Hands as an organisation. Workers can be investigated and sanctioned directly by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission for breaches of the Code.

5. Social Media Policy

Safe Hands recognises that workers use social media in their personal lives. The following rules apply at all times:

A breach of participant confidentiality on social media is a serious disciplinary matter and may also constitute a breach of the Privacy Act 1988 and the NDIS Code of Conduct. It can result in immediate termination and referral to the NDIS Commission.

6. Conflicts of Interest

A conflict of interest arises when a worker's personal interests could improperly influence - or appear to influence - their professional decisions. Workers must:

7. Raising Concerns & Reporting

Every worker has a responsibility and a right to raise concerns about participant safety, misconduct, or quality of services. Safe Hands is committed to protecting workers who raise concerns in good faith.

Workers who deliberately conceal an incident, make a false report, or discourage others from reporting will face serious disciplinary consequences including potential termination and referral to the NDIS Commission.

8. Conduct Outside of Work

Workers represent Safe Hands beyond the workplace. Conduct outside of work hours can still affect your employment if it:

Workers must notify Safe Hands immediately if they are charged with - or convicted of - any criminal offence. This applies in particular to offences relating to children, violence, dishonesty, or drug-related matters.

9. Consequences of Breach

Breaches of this Code of Conduct will be investigated and responded to proportionately. Consequences may include:

Gross misconductImmediate termination; referral to NDIS Commission, police, or relevant licensing body

Examples of gross misconduct that may result in immediate dismissal and referral to authorities include: physical, sexual, or psychological abuse of a participant; fraud or theft; misuse of a participant's NDIS funds; deliberate concealment of a reportable incident; attending work intoxicated while responsible for a participant's safety.

10. Worker Acknowledgement

All workers must sign the acknowledgement below before commencing employment or engagement with Safe Hands, and again upon any significant revision of this Code.

By signing below, I confirm that I have read, understood, and agree to comply with the Safe Hands Code of Conduct. I understand that failure to comply may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of my employment or engagement, and referral to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
